Why Alberta is Perfect for Solar Energy

High Solar Potential

Alberta’s southern regions have some of the highest solar irradiance levels in Canada, making them ideal for solar power systems.

Alberta Solar Incentives

Alberta’s private energy market allows favourable financial mechanisms such as the Solar Club. Additional regional incentives

Clean Energy Transition

Alberta currently gets most of its power from natural gas. Solar energy helps diversify the province's energy mix while offsetting emissions from this high-carbon fuel source.

Cost of Solar Panels in Alberta

The cost of solar panels in Alberta varies depending on your location, the size of the installation, and the specific requirements of your property. Solar cost is measured per unit of power ($/W) - the lower, the better. On average, solar installations in Alberta range from 2.00/W to 3.00/W, with most residential systems costing between $15,000 to $25,000.

Larger systems often benefit from economies of scale, resulting in a lower cost per watt. Other factors that contribute to the economics of your investment are whether you need electrical work to integrate the solar power system and your location within Alberta (cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, or Lethbridge being more accessible than smaller Northern towns). Additionally, if you want a battery energy storage system, or an EV charger, that will add to your project total.

Unique to Alberta: Solar Club – Maximize Your Savings

Solar Club is a unique program available only to Alberta homeowners, designed to maximize the financial benefits of solar energy. When you join Solar Club, you can sell the excess power your solar panels generate back to the grid at premium rates during peak times, earning more for the energy you don't use.

The program also offers flexible rate plans, allowing you to switch between high export rates when you're generating surplus energy and lower rates when you need to buy electricity from the grid. This dual-rate system helps you save money year-round, ensuring you get the most out of your solar investment. Solar Club is a great way for Alberta residents to reduce electricity costs and increase the return on their solar installations.

Net metering Alberta

  • You purchase electricity from a private retailer such as Utilities by Kuby. The retailer facilitates electricity transfer to you through your local region’s Wire Service Provider (Epcor, Enmax, Fortis, ATCO or local REA)
  • Energy is used by your home first which offsets your electricity rate, approximately $0.07kWh (energy) + $0.04/kWh (transmission + distribution). If you generate your own energy, you are now saving money by not importing electricity.
  • If more energy is needed than the solar panels can supply, you will draw from the grid as you currently do. This process is fully automatic and there is no delay.
  • If excess energy is created, it is sold back to your retailer for a credit on your next billing cycle (Net Metering). Energy (kWh) is credited at the same rate you purchase it for ($0.07/kWh). This allows you to generate money by exporting solar electricity. With the Alberta Solar Club, your electricity rate can be optimized throughout the year to receive a higher rate when you are a net energy exporter.
  • At night, you will draw electricity from the grid as you currently do.

Quick facts about
solar panels in Alberta

Alberta is one of the best places in Canada for solar installations, outperforming Germany, a global leader in solar power.

The average Alberta home consumes around 7,200 kWh of electricity per year, making solar panels an excellent choice for offsetting a large part of that usage.

Alberta has historically relied on fossil fuels (natural gas and coal) for electricity. The province has transitioned away from coal but is heavily reliant on natural gas.

Alberta homeowners pay around $0.10/kWh, including transmission, distribution, and admin fees. Solar can reduce these costs significantly.
